Lena Horne

Lena Horne is a living legend. For the one or two of you who might not know why, here is a thumbnail sketch of a career spanning over six decades: work as a chorus girl at the legendary Cotton Club, band singer with the likes of Noble Sissle and Artie Shaw, engagements at the renowned Cafe Society, the first African American to be signed to a long-term contract with MGM pictures, appearances in the films "Cabin in the Sky" and "Stormy Weather"--whose title song became her signature song--yet her parts were often clipped out for showings in the southern United States, a close friend of Billy Strayhorn, an association with Paul Robeson, blacklisted in McCarthy-era Hollywood, criticized for wedding a white man, several Grammy awards, a Kennedy Center Honors Award and an honorary degree from Yale.
