Wayne with students at Bale Elementary after a presentation of Gwendolyn Brooks poem "We Real Cool." With a grant for a progran called "Artistic Intervention," his Readers Theatre class adopted Mrs. Franklin's 4th grade class and did a presentation from literature every other week. After the presentation, college students would lead discussions of feelings & issues in the literature and relate them to the lives of the children and then let the children do the performance.

 

 

     

Wayne with cast of Robert Lewis Stevenson's The Beach of Falesá. Directing a play provides a teacher with a wonderful teaching environment. Students learn about the work of literature by making critical decisions regarding character and action and then living those decisions before an audience.
